About Us

The Fair Practices Office (FPO) is an independent agency, separate from the Workers’ Compensation Board (WCB), the Appeals Commission, and the Medical Panels Office.

We are here to help Albertans who have questions or concerns about Alberta’s workers’ compensation system.

Our services include:

• Pathfinding and Connections – We can help put you in touch with the right person or service for your needs. All Albertans are welcome to contact us for help navigating the workers’ compensation system.
• Advice and assistance with appeals – If you disagree with a WCB decision, we can offer advice about what to do, and advocate on your behalf. We can also help you file an appeal and represent you in the appeal process. Our review and appeal assistance services are available for most employers and workers covered by Alberta’s WCB.
• Fairness reviews – We can look at how the WCB, Appeals Commission, or Medical Panels Office made a decision, to see if it was made fairly. We can also look at whether you were treated fairly, including if the WCB followed its Code of Rights and Conduct.

All services are available free of charge.

What We Can't Do

We cannot change or set aside a decision or policy made by the WCB, Appeals Commission or Medical Panels Office.

We do not have the authority to make decisions about compensation, premiums, or other matters to do with claims or accounts.

Our fairness reviews are limited to decisions made in Alberta’s workers’ compensation system (WCB, Appeals Commission and Medical Panels Office). If you think you have been treated unfairly by some another organization, contact the Alberta Ombudsman.
